"Mr President, I, too, should like to start by thanking the rapporteur, Ms Podimata, the shadow rapporteurs and everyone else for their amendments and contributions to the report before us today. I trust that this report will be a positive contribution by the European Parliament to the fight against speculation and in addressing the question of the supervision and resolution of the financial sector. At the same time, it would be helpful if broad agreement could be reached within the framework of the coordination of tax and budgetary policies and if this tax could be integrated into that, in order to prevent distortions in the single market even though, as we all know, such agreement is difficult to reach. At the same time, we must press on with our efforts within the framework of the international community, because we also need to protect our financial sector. It is a Union objective that I consider extremely important. We also need to consider how we can ensure that we do not undermine the much-discussed growth which the Union so desperately needs at present; that is why I support the amendment exempting investment funds and pension funds. Finally, a word about resources. It has always been my understanding that this tax is linked to resources and their availability. I believe that this is an opportunity for the Union to acquire a source of own resources and to utilise this tax to give growth in Europe the kick start that it needs. This is a moment of creation and we must make use of it."@en1
