"Mr President, I am going to support the introduction of this financial transaction tax, even though, as my colleagues have pointed out, there are still issues to be clarified. It would be good to introduce it globally and for it to be accepted by all Member States, and also for it not to be imposed on customers by the financial sector.
Just recently, we heard one of the biggest investment banks in the world announce to us, openly, that it has lost billions, precisely as a result of the same financial transactions which caused the crisis we are currently in. These events lead us to believe that some of the major players in the financial sector have actually learnt nothing from this crisis and would still like to continue to engage in ‘business as usual’. This is why I believe that such a tax, particularly on speculative financial transactions, is a welcome step."@en1
