". Mr President, Ms Vestager, Commissioner, ladies and gentlemen, globalisation has brought with it disproportionate growth in the financial sector, where transactions are known to be currently 70 times greater than global wealth. The non-transparency and frequency of these transactions, along with high pay and very high risk, not only characterise the world in which we live today, but also constitute fundamental reasons behind the crisis that we are currently experiencing. However, it is ordinary people who have been forced to take responsibility and to shoulder the burden for the crisis to a far greater extent that the sector that caused it. This moment is therefore crucial. Given its importance, I personally would like to get to a situation in which this tax were brought in universally in all of the EU Member States and later extended to the rest of the world, with the active involvement of the Commission and the EU in general, under the G20. I would like it to cover all products, without exceptions. I would also like it to serve as a basis for the necessary strengthening of the EU’s own resources. In the short term, it is necessary to accept compromises, but we should not lose sight of the direction that we need to follow. This can only be achieved if the objectives are clearly identified by Parliament and by the Commission, and if they receive strong backing from the Council. That is what Europeans are looking for us to deliver today, and I can only express my thanks for the role played not only by Ms Podimata, who was tireless in this process, but all of those who have succeeded in overcoming their differences to arrive at this common position."@en1
