"Mr President, first of all, I would like to say that this Parliament can make a financial transaction tax become a reality today. We are, therefore, facing a very important moment and a very important decision in order to be able to tackle this crisis and put forward a new growth model in the European Union.
This tax clearly has a very high social content, and the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament in particular has been trying to develop that content so as to foster solidarity and sustainability in Europe.
In the Committee on Development, we have raised awareness considerably so that part of this revenue can be earmarked for solidarity and the aim of eradicating poverty throughout the world.
I would therefore like to thank both the Commission and the Council, and particularly the rapporteur, Ms Podimata, for the excellent job she has done, for the sensitivity she has shown towards the Committee on Development and, above all, for working with us so that part of that financial transaction tax can be spent on those who most need it."@en1
