"China’s economic potential has made it one of the European Union’s most important trading partners. Trade between the EU and China has shown three decades of continuous growth, giving both partners a high share of world trade. There is, however, one aspect of trade relations to which we should pay particular attention. For almost 15 years, there has been an imbalance in bilateral trade. This has been to the advantage of only one side, China, and it means that the trade deficit amounts to around EUR 170 billion in China’s favour.
The European Parliament should call the attention of the Commission to the need to apply the reciprocity principle in the EU’s common trade policy with China. Only in this way will we minimise the lack of full and fair competition caused by the fact that the Chinese economy does not fulfil the criteria of a market economy. Furthermore, the Union should require China to adopt international standards for products and services, which will foster transparency in bilateral trade and help improve the safety of products manufactured in China for European consumers. The growing imbalance in trade with China is a warning for the Union which demonstrates that without respect for the reciprocity principle in bilateral relations, Europe will become nothing more than an outlet for Chinese products and not a partner for the dynamically developing Chinese economy. This is why it is so important to restore the health of EU-China bilateral trade."@en1
