"Mr President, this Council must send a message to the citizens of Europe and tell them that the Union is not simply a lending vehicle which, when we obey, gives us loans and, when we disobey, threatens to cut off our loans.
With the collapse of the political centre, Greece is on the way to becoming either the new Weimar Republic or the new Cuba of the Mediterranean. The measures imposed on Greece have been imposed with such speed and such ferocity that not even we Greek politicians had time to describe them. That is why society reacted as it did.
We Greeks know what is in store for us if we reintroduce the drachma. However, we do not know what is in store for us if we remain in the euro, given everything we need to do and want to do in order to remain in the euro.
Commissioners, send out a message tomorrow as to what the future of Europe is. Tell us exactly what we should tell the public; explain that we are staying in Europe because that is the future, because the new generation will move in that direction, because that is what will happen. We have no arguments. Run a campaign in the countries in difficulty and explain to the public simply, in layman’s terms, what the European Union has done and what direction it is taking. This is not the Europe we dreamed of."@en1
