"The so-called European citizens’ initiative is little more than a thin layer of pseudo-democratic varnish, and has very little to do with real democratic participation as exists, for example, in Switzerland. How can we leave it up to a college of politically appointed officials like the Commission to decide which matters are taken up and which not? How can we talk of ‘participation’ when key subjects – such as the potential accession of Turkey to the European Union – cannot even be put on the agenda? The fact that the European Parliament does not contemptuously dismiss this charade, this obvious total bunk, is yet another in a countless series of missed opportunities."@en1
