"I voted in favour of this decision because the European Parliament’s Rules of Procedure need to be amended to implement the European citizens’ initiative. Given that Regulation (EU) No 211/2011 came into force on 1 April 2012 and the first citizens’ initiatives had been registered, the European Parliament’s procedures had to be updated to enable it to fulfil its specific role in this process, especially in terms of organising the public hearings. On this basis, I supported the suitable involvement of the Committee on Petitions in organising and holding the hearings, given that it provides the direct, permanent link with citizens, benefiting from considerable experience in communicating with the latter and in handling the issues they raise.
I am pleased that the majority of MEPs endorsed this position and that the amendment concerning the Committee on Petitions’ automatic involvement in the process of organising the hearings, as specified in Article 50, features in the final text. At the same time, I think that it is important that initiatives which do not register a sufficient number of signatures are not overlooked or ignored. I feel that the decision which has been adopted provides an appropriate solution from this perspective."@en1
