"The legislative framework on women’s rights in Turkey needs to be better supported and better implemented. The Turkish Government should enact laws and by-laws, and issue strategy papers, national action plans and protocols on important issues such as the prevention of violence against women, the schooling of girls and eradication of illiteracy among women, and increased women’s participation in the labour market. However, the transformation of legislation into practice has not been satisfactory until recently. Furthermore, there has been a lack of cooperation between the Turkish Government and civil society in the area of women’s rights – which is especially regrettable since gender equality can be realised only through the coordinated efforts of society as a whole. Therefore, I supported this report with my vote because I believe and expect that the Turkish Government and its ministries should cooperate in the area of gender equality, bringing projects to life to give effect to the legislation on improving women’s standard of living. This change is still at a preliminary stage, which is why the report, while acknowledging the positive move, is careful in not prematurely absolving Turkey from its past deficiencies."@en1
