"I voted in favour of the report because it calls for women’s rights and equality issues to play a central role in the ongoing negotiations about Turkey’s possible accession to the European Union. One very positive development is that my amendment, which highlights the particular vulnerability of Kurdish women in Turkish society, has been included in the report. However, I believe that there must be much fiercer criticism and stronger international condemnation of the systematic oppression of the Kurds by the Turkish state. The report should also have highlighted concerns that 500 Kurdish women are currently in prison in Turkey. However, because the report represents a move in the right direction with regard to its recommendations on the human rights of all women and on equality in Turkey, I chose to vote in favour of it."@en1
