"It is important that the debate on the situation of women in Turkey is based on facts and that it recognises the progress that has been achieved. However, it is not the EU’s responsibility to make recommendations on how Turkey should promote equality, whether it should introduce a quota system or what its priorities should be in terms of education and family policy. I welcome the fact that Turkey has made moves to support women’s rights and participation in society, in particular, in schools and on the labour market. We can continue our cooperation in encouraging female entrepreneurs, not just in large cities, but also in rural areas. However, we must show that we respect the country’s culture, traditions and religion and that we are not forcing Turkey to adopt our model. At the same time, these traditions must not be a reason for oppressing women. I regularly underline the importance of holding a dialogue with the Turkish Government and with members of the Turkish Parliament about the disturbing number of honour killings and about domestic violence against women. It is very encouraging that Turkey has ratified the convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence and has recently passed legislation and introduced action plans. Turkey is aware that the challenge facing it is to change attitudes in society and the view of the role of women and to ensure that these changes are put into practice."@en1
