"We voted in favour of the own-initiative report on a strategy for strengthening the rights of vulnerable consumers. We welcome the fact that the report highlights the importance of subsidiarity and that it does not aim to establish different levels of protection for consumers. Instead, the starting point is a high level of protection for everyone. We believe that vulnerable consumers should be given the same opportunities to make free and informed choices. Therefore, we support self-regulatory initiatives and increased cooperation between the Commission, the Member States and industry in order to give consumers greater power. We also welcome the fact that the report emphasises the importance of responsible advertising aimed at children on TV and on the Internet, because children are not always able to understand and evaluate the message that is being conveyed. We agree that advertising should not be regulated at an EU level but, therefore, we believe that it is extremely important for companies to take part in the voluntary initiatives and to comply with the codes of conduct that have been set up."@en1
