"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, there are very many matters in this report with which I am in agreement. I have always been a supporter of strengthening ties between the European Union and international institutions such as NATO, and of establishing a common strategy for fighting organised crime and carrying on a common fight against terrorism. It is obvious to me, too, that very many of the threats we face today in the field of security are almost exclusively threats of a transnational nature, both within the European Union and also outside its borders. Therefore – in my opinion – it is important for the Member States to be ready to cooperate in this area, and the cooperation should be made as extensive as possible. Unfortunately, I am also a supporter of upholding the sovereignty of nation states, including within the European Union – particularly in such a sensitive area as security – so this was a difficult decision, but I abstained from the vote."@en1
