"Mr President, I support all the activities that improve business conditions for SMEs in the EU. Our many programmes to support small and medium-sized enterprises are, however, of little benefit. We talk and write a lot, but the effect of this work is not visible, and it gets lost in bureaucratic procedures. Small businesses are often established and run by people with only primary or secondary education. Therefore, both small businesses and entrepreneurs need simple rules for their establishment, operation, accounting and also their taxation. If we fail to force our governments to push through a simple and transparent scheme for the operation of small and medium-sized enterprises with a minimum of bureaucracy, officials in our countries will continue to bully small businesses. A rank-and-file governmental official will not dare to criticise a powerful large business. However, he can unashamedly make his importance felt to any small bakery or hairdresser. I firmly believe that European government bureaucracy represents the greatest barrier to the development of small and medium enterprises."@en1
