"Mr President, Commissioner, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) play a key role in the economies of many countries; countries that are suffering enormously from the economic and financial crisis. The huge role of SMEs in job creation is even more important for sectors of the population such as women, immigrants or the young. Young people currently account for 40% or almost 50% of unemployment in many Member States.
The high unemployment rates demand of the political class – of all of us – that we make this economic sector more competitive in Europe. There have been very indebted SMEs in Europe in recent years. In fact, we believe that 85% of the jobs created in the European Union were created by SMEs, especially new companies. However, we believe there are major administrative burdens. There is therefore a need to provide for programmes specifically intended to boost the SME sector in the upcoming Cohesion Fund reform. We need to use innovative measures, facilities and new technologies to streamline the mechanisms for coordinating the various administrations; to show the potential of cross-border companies; to risk opening up the market; and to help SMEs to combat the crisis and the lack of jobs."@en1
