"I voted against the joint motion for a resolution on maritime piracy as I believe that it does not take account of the socio-economic factors which account for this state of affairs and that the international action which has been put in place is not the right response. Military intervention is not a solution and the European Development Fund (EDF) should not therefore be used for this purpose. If we follow this argument, the EU NAVFOR Atalanta operation must be considered a failure. In my view, there can be no improvement in the situation without an improvement in the living conditions of the population, who are caught in the stranglehold of civil war and ecological and economic disasters. European economic interests should not drive decision making. Piracy is the result of poverty and the absence of a cooperation policy worthy of that name which could do something about it. What the southern countries need is for the rich countries to completely reverse their international policies. Until things change, extreme poverty, famine and conflict will remain the southern countries’ daily lot."@en1
