"I voted in favour of this motion as it is very important that the non-patentability of biological breeding methods should be maintained in agriculture. Our farmers and breeders must continue to have available to them the unrestricted diversity of genetic resources from farm animals and agricultural crops. I would therefore like to express my emphatic opposition to the patentability of biological methods for breeding plants and animals and of breeding material used in conventional breeding, along with my support for the EU continuing to apply a comprehensive breeders’ exemption in its patent law, applying across the Union, for plant and animal breeding. Patent protection for essential biological processes of this kind would be unethical and would stand in the way of innovation and progress in the field of breeding, in particular, and be to the detriment of breeders."@en1
