"I voted in favour of the draft European Parliament legislative resolution on the proposal for a regulation concerning the export and import of dangerous chemicals. I did so because I believe that this report contains a balanced analysis of the role that the EU has to play in protecting human health and the environment, both within and outside Europe. The EU, deeming health and environmental protection to be of fundamental importance for its citizens, has decided to extend the list of prohibited chemicals established by the international Rotterdam Convention. I welcome the rapporteur’s suggestion to oppose allowing exporters to trade the listed products when they have not received a response within 60 days from the importing countries because this would create an exception that would be potentially harmful to the health and to the environment of those countries with weaker administrations. This goes against the purposes of the EU, and the Rotterdam Convention as well. It is important that that the EU carefully limits its derogations regarding the export of dangerous chemicals, since I believe it is our responsibility to ensure that the products we export do not have negative effects in other countries."@en1
