"As a member of the Parliamentary Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety, I argued in favour of granting discharge to the European Environment Agency, which does a superb job. However, a majority of my fellow Members has asked for the vote to be postponed in order to investigate a possible conflict of interest that might affect the running of the agency. Since the agency’s Executive Director has also sat on the international consultative committee of the non-governmental organisation Earthwatch (an international environmental protection organisation), Parliament will take the time to look into the agency’s accounts in greater depth. This will send out the message that conflicts of interest, if they are substantiated and could have an impact on the running of public agencies, will not be tolerated."@en1
