"The free movement of persons within the boundaries of the European Union is one of the four fundamental freedoms guaranteed to European citizens. A comprehensive transport network that is not restricted to the major capitals needs to be set up in order for this right to be effectively guaranteed. Parliament therefore has the responsibility of adjusting the direction taken by the Commission, which is too focused on developing hubs, and shows little interest in the potential of regional airports. The full development of the latter is, in fact, fundamental for guaranteeing the aforementioned freedom of movement, and for promoting economic development in the areas where these airports are built, because their expansion would also alleviate the problems of congestion at hubs, and consequently make the transport system more sustainable from an environmental point of view as well. For the above reasons, I therefore voted in favour of this report on the future of regional airports. Finally, I hope that Malpensa airport will be developed to its full potential and go back to being an international hub, because, as the economic capital of Italy, Milan and its businesses need to be properly linked to other Member States."@en1
