"In 2010, Russia was the largest exporter of steel to the EU, with more than 6.5 million tonnes, representing 24% of EU steel imports. With Russia’s accession to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) on 16 December 2011, however, the EU no longer has the right to apply quotas on imports of steel. Following Russia’s accession to the WTO, it is expected that the EU will benefit from freer access to the Russian market. The export of iron and steel products to Russia may grow at an annual rate of about EUR 107 million. The growth in exports of these products from the EU to Russia may also be helped by a reduction in export duties on ferrous scrap from the current 15% to 5%, which should be introduced within five years of Russia’s accession to the WTO. I therefore supported a repeal of Council Regulation (EC) No 1342/2007 on administering certain restrictions on imports of certain steel products from the Russian Federation."@en1
