"Air transport plays a key role in the economic growth of regions and in creating new jobs, especially where this involves less developed regions, regions located at the European Union’s external borders and the outermost regions. We all acknowledge the particular importance of these airports, not only from an economic and social perspective, but also in terms of the environment. However, the real problem seems to arise when it comes to obtaining funding.
This is precisely why I think that, for the forthcoming programming period, we must most definitely include regional airports as a matter of course on the list of beneficiaries eligible to apply for EU funding or resources from other financial engineering instruments funded by the EU. This means that building or modernising regional airports will make the regions significantly more appealing, with the direct upshot of attracting investors and tourists to the region and, by extension, of contributing to their development."@en1
