"Mr President, as has been mentioned in this Chamber, we are celebrating Europe Day today in a European Union split between hope and delusion. In light of this, the election of François Hollande on Sunday as President of France and the inauguration on Monday of the social democratic leader, Victor Ponta, as prime minister of the new Romanian Government are important steps towards the progressive left taking responsibility for giving the European project a future again.
In addition to this, these changes restore hope and belief in a Europe in crisis, where changes of government are taking place under the pressure of popular discontent, and poverty is spreading and the demons of the past are returning with a vengeance: xenophobia, anti-semitism, extremism, nationalism and protectionism. Greece is just one example of Europe’s failure, originating from a decline in its economic integration.
I hope that the new trends in political support will trigger a process for rethinking and deepening the European project, including through defending democracy, reaffirming the social model and narrowing the disparities between Member States."@en1
