"Madam President, Commissioner, Ms Niebler, where I come from, on the border between Galicia and Portugal, there are many constituents who call every day to say that they are affected by the problem of roaming charges, as the network operators even change without one changing country. These are consumers and workers who cross internal European borders and receive exorbitant bills.
Today, on Europe Day, we are talking about the communications border and price inequality. We are talking about an advance being made in the regulation of phone and data roaming. This regulation is therefore welcome, Commissioner. I welcome the fact that it attacks the lack of competition and the monopolies, that it gives consumers more choice, and also that it tackles price disparities. This, however, is not enough. We need to facilitate fairer prices and to communicate without borders, and so alleviating this problem and going for zero roaming charges is also a way of integrating Europe."@en1
