"I am voting for this report and would express my deep concern at the intensifying terrorist threat in northern Mali, due to the presence of al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb members and other extremists amongst the rebels. As such, I condemn the acts of violence and looting of which, specifically, staff from humanitarian organisations have been victims, as well as the abduction of Algerian diplomatic personnel in Gao. I also particularly condemn the atrocities committed against the civilian population, which were directed more against women than against any other victims, as well as the use of abduction and rape as weapons of war. There is an urgent need to investigate the atrocities in Mali in recent months. The EU and its Member States need to pay particular attention to the situation of women and children in the Sahel region, and to take all the measures necessary to ensure their protection against any form of violence or human rights violation. If the European Union wants to be a global player, it has to defend human rights assertively."@en1
