"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, a former President of my country once said, ‘The house is on fire and we are looking the other way’. Indeed, the economic crisis has tended to overshadow the ecological and environmental crisis that we are experiencing, the long-term consequences of which are extremely serious. With this 7th EU Environment Action Programme, Parliament is therefore today urging the Commission to focus on applying and strengthening existing measures, and to take the environment into account in all sectoral policies so that the European Union continues to act as a driving force in the fight against climate change on an international scale. There are tools available to turn our economy into a more sustainable growth model. The EUR 370 billion proposed in the budget for the next cohesion policy will only represent real added value if these funds are used to finance future projects that respect the environment. The Commission is proposing that the most developed regions devote 20% of their European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) budget to moving towards a low-carbon economy and the less developed regions only 5%. I question this gap. Is 5% really enough? I think, rather, that all the regions should recognise the usefulness of the European environment strategy and make efforts to apply it and respect its objectives."@en1
