"Mr President, I voted in favour of this report because it meets the objective of including gender issues in all EU policies. Studies show that women are more vulnerable to the effects of climate change, especially in case of migrations caused by droughts and water shortages. They would amount to as much as 75% of the total number of environmental refugees, but women should not be perceived only as victims, but rather as potential contributors to the prevention of global warming through a more responsible behaviour and their central role in water management. This latter aspect was recognised by the UN within the International Decade for Action ‘Water for life’ which runs until 2015. I encourage closer cooperation with the UN in order to promote women’s participation in environmental protection programmes."@en1
