"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, I voted in favour of the Tőkés report because I understand the importance of modernising Europe’s education systems. Higher education plays a fundamental role in an individual’s personal growth, social integration and contribution to the economic and cultural influence of the European Union. Europe’s total investment in higher education is still too low. We all know about the current budgetary constraints but this is a key issue. We must use all the tools available to us to provide European universities with the necessary funding. The Commission has proposed an ambitious education budget for the next period. It will be able to count on Parliament’s full support. Structural Funds can and must also be mobilised for higher education. Between 2007 and 2013, more than EUR 70 billion from these funds will have been allocated to education and training. Lastly, some inexpensive initiatives can have considerable multiplying effects. In my region, a cross-border university research centre has been established, allowing for integrated training between France and Spain. Students therefore have two job markets and all the potential of two cultures available to them."@en1
