"Madam President, firstly, I would like to congratulate Mr Gerbrandy. This is a very good report and it gives us guidelines as to how we should act in forthcoming legislative procedures and during major reform processes. The litmus test will come when we discuss agricultural reform. Many of the speeches today have already made this clear. This is where we will have the opportunity to do more to promote biodiversity and to show our other partners, for example, at the Rio+20 conference, that we take this subject seriously.
The Heads of State or Government agreed in 2001 that biodiversity must be protected. Unfortunately, we have failed to achieve this objective. The window of opportunity is gradually closing and it is time for us to act. The problem will not be resolved solely by this strategy. The whole issue must be incorporated into the reform of fisheries and agriculture policy and given a more concrete form."@en1
