"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, the fight against climate change is necessary for the survival of the planet. It is absolutely critical that Europe and all stakeholders strive to limit the increase in average temperatures to 2 °C. This is the only way that we can lower the risk of natural disasters, and consequent migration and population displacement.
It is acknowledged at international level that it is certainly the poor who suffer the most. Well, 70% of the world’s poorest are women. In the developing world, it is women who play a crucial role in the abstraction and practical management of water, not just in the home but also in farming, and it is women who today have to work more owing to droughts and water shortages resulting precisely from climate change.
This is why gender perspectives must be mainstreamed into all stages of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change negotiation process, in order to effectively improve the welfare of women around the world."@en1
