"Mr President, I come from Slovenia and this is extremely important to my country. These maps describing natural agricultural handicaps are of the utmost importance. However, I would like to take this opportunity to support those members who argue that in defining these areas, biophysical criteria are not enough, and that socio-economic criteria also need to be considered when determining these areas.
Yet within that, I would like to highlight something which has still not been addressed today: the serious demographic problem we have in the European Union and the shortage of young farmers involved in agricultural production is one of the biggest problems facing the future of European agriculture.
I recently had a public debate on this issue in Parliament and it was revealed that only 6% of young people actively involved in agriculture within Europe are under the age of 35 – clearly this number is far too low. Therefore, I propose that the mechanism also include this type of criterion."@en1
