".
I supported the European Parliament legislative resolution consenting to the conclusion of the agreement between the United States and the European Union, as I consider that the agreement is necessary to discover, investigate and fight terrorism and other serious transnational crime more efficiently. The agreement is of equal importance to both the US and the EU law-enforcement agencies, since it is provided that the United States must share the information that it obtains from passenger name records (PNR) at its disposal with EU law-enforcement agencies. At the same time, the agreement provides strict rules for the circumstances under which PNR data may be used and for how long they may be retained so as not to infringe individual rights. If people nevertheless come to have any doubts that personal data are being used inappropriately, any person living in the EU may apply to the courts and request that the US Department of Homeland Security delete or amend that person’s data where they are incorrect. I therefore consider that the protection of individuals’ personal data has been secured and that personal data will be used solely to ensure and reinforce national security."@en1
