Around 45% of Liberia’s territory is covered by tropical forest, timber from which was used to finance the armed conflict between 1997 and 2003, leading the UN Security Council to impose an embargo on timber from the country by 2006. This text concerns the draft Council decision on the conclusion of a Voluntary Partnership Agreement (VPA) between the European Union and Liberia on forest law enforcement, governance and trade (FLEGT) in timber and derived products to the European Union, in the context of the FLEGT action plan. This is an EU initiative intended to prevent illegally logged timber from entering the EU. In order for the EU-Liberia VPA – concluded 27 July 2011 – to come into force, it must first be adopted by the European Parliament. I am voting for this recommendation, because I consider it crucial that there be legislation promoting sustainability in the forestry sector and preventing indiscriminate logging. Moreover, this VPA will make a sustainable contribution to Liberia’s overall development."@en1
