"Mr President, this is a very difficult matter, where, on the one hand, the protection of data of our citizens and, on the other, the fight against terrorism and people’s right to security, are in conflict. It is absolutely important that the EU works together with the United States closely and over the long term. There need to be effective ways to combat terrorism and serious transnational crime. At the same time, however, we have to remember the importance of respecting people’s fundamental and human rights.
I voted against the Agreement, because it is flawed to an extent that I find totally unacceptable. I see a problem, first of all, in the broadly defined purpose of Passenger Name Records. For example, there is no adequate definition of terrorism in the text of the Agreement. There are problems too with the retention of periods for data and the loophole in the protection of personal data, if it is passed on to third countries."@en1
