".
Madam President, the residence permit restriction continues, nonetheless, to be a major deficiency when it comes to the protection of victims of human trafficking. The Group of the Greens/European Free Alliance has tried to make significant representations to our joint debates in this Parliament, to the effect that victims of human trafficking should receive protection in the form of a residence permit. We have not been successful; what we are now left with is a temporary residence permit and a temporary residence permit means that after a court case, for example, you could still be sent back to the place from which you were trafficked, possibly even back to the people who contributed to your being trafficked in the first place. That remains a shortcoming.
I am pleased to see, however, that the victim package which is now being negotiated with the Council acknowledges that trafficking victims deserve support, regardless of their legal status, no matter whether they are legal or illegal. That will help victims of human trafficking."@en1
