"Thank you for your supplementary question. Naturally the combating of terrorism and organised crime is a necessary objective and also, in my opinion, an important measure that we in the European Union must pursue – in close partnership with the US. There is no doubt about that.
The question is: can this be achieved through the mass analysis of data belonging to numerous innocent individuals? Do we not rather need greater cooperation in investigating genuine suspects, in other words cooperation between police authorities when dealing with suspicious situations? We are moving in the wrong direction by spending more and more money on analysis centres and data centres where more and more innocent people are analysed, while at the same time cutting the resources available to the local police working on the investigation of genuine suspects. This should not be the case. We need further debate on this issue here in the European Parliament."@en1
