"I voted in favour of the document concerning the Annual Report on Human Rights in the World and the European Union’s policy on the matter, including implications for the EU’s strategic human rights policy, because it presents a balanced opinion of the current state of play and the improvements to be implemented to the EU’s action as a global player and within its internal governance, with regard to the human rights discipline. In particular, I strongly support the need for the European Parliament to be recognised, and to further enhance its role, as a key actor in the shaping of the implementation of the European Union’s human rights strategy. For this reason, I strongly believe that the Council and the Commission should systematically take up the Parliament’s resolutions and communications, by providing substantive responses to the impulse received from the democratically elected body of the EU. The report addresses the fundamental issues of the death penalty, arms control, torture and other cruel, inhumane and degrading treatment or punishment, women and human rights, freedom of religion, discrimination, children’s rights, freedom of expression. The guarantee of the highest standards of human rights must imperatively guide the EU’s action, in its external and internal policies."@en1
