In order to reassure them, it was agreed that a protocol offering assurances to the Irish people on matters such as the right to life, taxation, and safety and defence would be added to the Treaty on European Union and to the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union. On the strength of this undertaking, I supported the adoption of this report, which paves the way for adding the protocol to the Treaties, while welcoming the decision of the European Council to examine the amendments to the Treaties."@en1
