"I voted in favour of the decision on the accession of the European Union to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC) in Southeast Asia. The purpose of the TAC signed by the original members of ASEAN in 1976 is to promote peace, stability and cooperation in the region. The treaty was originally designed to apply only to states in the region, but it was amended in 1987 to allow states outside the region to accede to it. Apart from ASEAN Member States, the other countries which are party to this treaty include China, India, Japan, Russia, Australia, France and the US. In July 2006, Member States agreed to initiate proceedings towards the accession of the EU to the TAC. With this in mind, the TAC was modified considerably to allow the accession of non-state entities. The treaty supports the peaceful settlement of disagreements, peacekeeping, conflict prevention and the consolidation of security in Southeast Asia. The regulations and principles enshrined in the treaty are in keeping with the objectives of the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy. At the same time, the contracting parties make every effort to cooperate as closely as possible and to offer each other assistance in the form of training and research facilities in the social, cultural, scientific, technical and administrative spheres."@en1
