"I voted in favour of this report because I agree that the coordination of social security systems in different Member States is essential for achieving one of the EU’s key objectives – the free movement of workers. Until now, there have been cases where self-employed workers in one country pay taxes and have the right to unemployment benefit, but lose this right if they leave to seek work in another EU Member State. Such a practice demonstrates deficiencies in the legislation of individual EU countries, which should be eliminated as soon as possible. I therefore support the wish expressed by the rapporteur, the European Commission and the European Council to reach an agreement on the regulation at first reading. Then, the legislative provisions that are so needed would come into force in the near future."@en1
