"Madam President, ladies and gentlemen, in recent years, we have witnessed fast economic growth on the part of Azerbaijan, whose economic potential is obvious to all. We must also recognise that there has been a strengthening of the strategic role of that country as an Eastern partner, in particular, in the energy sector.
However, we must remember here that the gap in terms of democracy and the rule of law, good governance and respect for human rights compared to the standards required by the European Union has not yet been completely bridged. I believe that these principles should be considered essential for the proper conduct of the negotiations and the stipulation of an association agreement with Azerbaijan.
I hope that the Council and the Commission will be urging the Azerbaijani authorities to adopt an anti-discriminatory legislation that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. Meanwhile, we should welcome the reforms made by the Azerbaijani authorities in the judiciary in the last year, which should ensure greater independence of judges, and eliminate corruption in this area."@en1
