"Madam President, it is very important that the European Union unequivocally stands by its own commitment and defends human rights in all situations and every person’s right to life. Unfortunately, the strongly pro-life point of view is not sufficiently apparent in this report. There were also many other aspects of it that do not specifically endorse the human rights dimension. No matter: this report is better than nothing. It is good if, every now and then, we stop to consider these matters, which are so important to us, and try to see eye to eye on how to take human rights forward in countries that do not yet recognise them. Europe should also be more credible as far as its own actions are concerned. There are still many people here in the European Union who do not enjoy human rights. The Roma are one example of this, in many respects. We must therefore act more clearly and robustly to ensure that no violations of human rights take place within the European Union either. Finally, I would like to say that religious minorities, Christians in particular, have been ignored. Many of them, especially in the Middle East, now feel that their human rights are being trampled on. The rapporteur could also have done more to take this into account."@en1
