"Mr President, the social and economic situation of the Portuguese people is deteriorating badly, and their living conditions are rapidly declining to subhuman and unbearable levels. Meanwhile, the troika, of which the Commission is part, with the servile agreement of the Portuguese Government, believes that Portugal is on track. However, let us see what track that is: does increased debt and economic dependence, a deepening recession with the consequent rise in unemployment – which has already reached 15%, with over 200 000 job losses forecast for 2012 and 2013 – and increased poverty with a quarter of Portuguese people living on the poverty line mean that Portugal is on track? Do you believe, ladies and gentlemen, that the decline in the Portuguese standard of living, with an estimated 7.3% drop in private consumption in 2012, the theft of public sector workers’ and pensioners’ holiday pay and Christmas bonuses, and the freezing and cutting of wages is because Portugal is on track? Do you believe that the closure of multiple public health services with a view to their privatisation, as well as many other public services, and the increased number of Portuguese with nutritional deficiencies, particularly school-age children, is a sign that Portugal is on track?"@en1
