"Mr President, preserving biodiversity is one of the European Union objectives that, unfortunately, is not always effectively met. This is the case in Galicia, where 16 000 hectares have burnt this year and where the fires have razed to the ground areas of incalculable economic value, seven of them part of the Natura network. A month ago, this was how the Fragas do Eume national park, one of the main Atlantic forests in Europe, looked. Today, this is the forest’s bleak appearance. We therefore call on the Commission to promote common fire prevention policies and territorial policies to prevent land abandonment, and to ensure that the master plans to protect and conserve these ecosystems are implemented. We want to leave a green country for the future."@en1
