"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, I would like to remind you that, this week in Washington, many members of civil society and various political parties from around the world will be meeting to call on President Obama to perform an act of justice: to release the five Cubans arrested in 1998 in Florida and accused by the US Government of committing espionage and infiltrating into the US as secret agents of a foreign State, even though none of this could ever be proven.
Tried in a climate of great hostility in Miami, they were sentenced to extremely harsh prison terms, in violation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. The UN has declared their trial invalid, as it lacked the minimum standards for a fair trial, and has called on the US Government to release them. Amnesty International has repeatedly criticised the US over its treatment of the five prisoners as being contrary to all human rights.
Today, procedures at all levels of the courts have been completed and the Cubans have been in prison for 14 years. It is now up to President Obama alone to remedy this gross injustice."@en1
