"Mr President, a moment ago, we concluded the debate on negotiations for association agreements with Armenia and Azerbaijan. It is, however, also a matter of considerable concern, I believe, to all Members of the European Parliament to see the current situation in Iran, a country that borders on this region. According to media reports, the talks conducted by six powers with Iran in Istanbul on Saturday could provide some grounds for optimism. Apparently, the Iranian side signalled its readiness to engage in discussions on its nuclear programme. What does worry me, however, is the fact that, on the other side, we can see a concentration of Russian forces on the southern frontier of Russia, namely, in the Caucasus. I believe that we should do everything possible to prevent Iran from enriching uranium, even though it is claimed that this is for civilian requirements in the fields of medicine and power generation. We should continue negotiations in Baghdad next month and, at the same time, keep Russian activities under constant surveillance, so that it does not profit from a situation where attention is focused on Iran in order to take control over former Soviet republics and, in particular, over their natural resources."@en1
