"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, in recent weeks, a few episodes have taken place that I would simply call curious, were it not for the fact that they represent an extremely serious and dangerous idea. In Italy, a group of pseudo-researchers, that has, however, won European and international awards, has announced its intention to reconsider, or even ban, the reading of the Divine Comedy, Dante’s masterpiece known and appreciated for centuries by millions of citizens worldwide. In their view, the work has too many racist, anti-Semitic and Islamophobic references and should therefore be revised in a modern and politically correct form. In Vienna, the city’s Restaurateurs’ Association has proposed banning the names of some traditional dishes, such as gypsy cutlets or Negro bread, so as not to offend the sensibilities of others. These episodes are not isolated, but represent a common and widespread feeling in Europe, in other words, the need to deny our roots simply to please other cultures, but a tree without roots dies, and that is the risk Europe runs if it does not immediately change direction and defend its origins and traditions."@en1
