"Mr President, on 26 April, we will commemorate the 75th anniversary of the bombing of Guernica during the Spanish civil war. At the time, the German air force was testing techniques for large-scale attacks on the civilian population, which were perfected during the Second World War. Franco, for his part, was attacking Basque institutions and national identity, which remained one of his objectives throughout his whole dictatorship. Guernica is now a symbol of peace in the world, made stronger by Picasso’s famous painting, which should be exhibited in the Basque Country. In 1977, the German State apologised to the Basque people for its part in that massacre. Today, in Spain, far-right revisionist historians are denying the truth, and many politicians are quietly acknowledging that pro-Franco impunity was the key to Spain’s successful transition to democracy. Perhaps that is why the only judge who has tried to investigate the dictator’s crimes has been expelled from the legal profession. I am therefore using this 75th anniversary as an opportunity to call for justice, an apology, and recognition for the victims. Seventy-five years later, it is vital that we settle our debt with the millions of people whose lives, dignity and freedoms were stolen from them by supporters of Franco."@en1
