"Mr President, after several decades, it seems that the path to reform and democratic transition is finally open in Burma. On 23 April, Aung San Suu Kyi will take her place in parliament where her party will be the main opposition force. We do not yet know whether real change will come about in this country because the political scene is still dominated by the military, and the economic situation, clashes with groups of insurgents and the way in which minorities are treated still provide grounds for concern. However, the recent developments are positive, and the Burmese authorities need to be encouraged to continue the reforms. Against this background, I support the gradual lifting of EU sanctions. I think that this action will not only have a positive impact on the development of democracy, but will also boost foreign investment, thereby helping the country’s economic recovery."@en1
