"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, having paid close attention to the by-election on 1 April, we will also be keeping a close watch on events on 23 April, when the newly elected Members of Parliament take up office. Indeed, we may recall that the National League for Democracy (NLD) had boycotted elections in November 2010, and now it has taken part in this by-election and achieved great success, winning 43 of the 44 seats being contested. Baroness Ashton has quite rightly emphasised the resolution of ethnic conflicts with the Karen minority; ethnic conflicts that, we should not forget, have been going on for decades.
Since March 2011, real change has been taking place in Burma. President Thein Sein has paved the way for reform, enabling his country to return to the international stage, as well as for several changes that allow us to see the beginnings of a better future for Burma. Baroness Ashton, when you go to Burma next week, you will no doubt have words of encouragement for the reforms that have been implemented there, but perhaps you may also pass on the message that it would be wise to be extra vigilant and to continue moving in the right direction."@en1
